After the “Visible Ceremony”, the soul of the younger twin stays to guard the village as a crimson butterfly and the gates are sealed. When the two bodies are reunited as one, the person will gain the power of a deity. Twins are believed to once be a single being split into two at birth. The physical pain of the sacrifice is believed to close the gate. In the “Crimson Sacrifice Ritual” the elder twin strangles the younger.
To keep the Abyss from unleashing the dead, a pair of twins born in the village are required to help periodically perform a “Forbidden Ritual” approximately every decade. Its deepest point is home to the “Hellish Abyss”, a deep hole which collects the souls of the dead. The Minakami Village’s history begins housing a system of tunnels underneath.
